Doppelgänger

Compared to the folklore’s depiction of a Doppelgänger, Fran’s shapeshifter kind is nothing like ghosts and exists in blood and flesh. They are able to take on other human’s physical traits which make it easy for them to blend in with the crowd. They have to drink the blood of those that they want to shapeshift into which is why they are fed with blood at a young age. The offspring starts to develop a visual library which they can choose from, and are able to shapeshift into.

And as much there can be a gene defect in humans, it’s just as common in shapeshifters which had struck Fran from a young age. Her shapeshifting abilities were never en par with her fellow clan members’ and she was often called out for her inability to deliver. As her siblings were able to transforms completely, she was only able to transform partially which was considered a lack of talent and determination.

Her disability had made her very secretive because she doesn’t like to share that kind of information with anyone but Alek which is why she had learned early on to detach herself from other people as much as possible to not reveal too much about her private life. The bitterness, which her family had caused with bullying and other mistreatments, had burned the uncertainty into her heart which makes her feel very self-conscious about the fact that she cannot shapeshift completely, but she tries to make the best out of it and doesn’t seem to disappoint the audience in showing them some ‘magic tricks’.

Fran was born into a nomadic clan that moved from city to city. They never stayed in one place for long and usually made their money with robbing small businesses and homes in the cities they reside in. Of course with them being shapeshifters, they approach a robbery a little different and use their supernatural powers to fool others. Although Fran’s shapeshifting abilities were not on par with her siblings’, she was still required to participated in the criminals acts.

On the day of the robbery, everything was planned out perfectly and everything seemed to go as planned, but just a small slip up managed to blow their cover in an antique store which forced her family to flee the scene. However Fran wasn’t able to leave the store in time and was almost caught, but luckily a boy that had observed them long enough, and helped her to find a hiding spot which ended up securing her freedom. After the commotion had died down, Fran continued to wait for her family members to return, but that moment never arrived which convinced her that they had left her behind because of her inability to use her shapeshifting abilities to her clan’s benefit.

At that time, Fran was only 14 when she met the young boy named Aleksei Vasilyev. He had kept her company all this time and made the time of waiting a little bit more bearable, but it didn’t change the fact that her family never came back to get her. The two children started to exchange stories and problems. Alek brought up how he was in conflict with his family and in the spur of the moment Fran convinced him to run away with her. She had been so bitter and frustrated with her current lifestyle and so was Alek. They mutually decided to leave the city together, but before they would do that, Fran encouraged him to leave his family one last “surprise”. They managed to relieve them of a few valuables and before they even knew it they were already on their way to the next city.

As they decided to run away from their homes, they wouldn’t have expected it to be this harsh and cruel. The street life was nothing compared to what they had imagined and they had struggled to survive. They taught themselves a few successful ways to pickpocket and decided to move on to something bigger which ended up being an old gypsy. He was an old performer and former pickpocketing master which was Fran and Alek’s demise. They were caught quickly, but with them being only kids, the old man decided to take them in, and they spend 5 years of their life time with him. They learned a few tricks and tips, but as much as they would have liked to stay a family forever; the old man eventually died of old age and they were once again…alone.

They continued their lives with plundering small businesses, but over time they believed that they could bigger businesses and what would be better than robbing a bank without anyone noticing? As much as they had gained experience, this one was too big of a gig and they ended up messing up in the process. Alek was put into prison as a result and Fran was able to escape. She hurried back to their meeting spot, which they decide on prior to every robbery, and she waited until Alek had broken out of it. Although she knew that her partner would have no problem to escape the prison, the feeling of waiting up on someone scared her and it felt to her like a déjà vu. Something like this had happened before, but to her relief Alek had made it back in one piece.

At that point they decided that they had to do other things with their life and had to move on from their criminal lifestyle. In which they discovered Cirque des Reves which was just the right place for their supernatural nature.

He had been an important part in Fran and Alek’s life and had significantly changed their approach to their robberies. They have learned performances and robbing techniques while they were under his care. He had taken them in because he could see that they were also supernatural creatures as him which hit a soft spot in his heart.

Aleksei Vasilyev is someone very close to her and since they ran away together, she cannot imagine being separate from him. She considers him her little brother and would trust him with anything.

Her eyes are a reddish orange.
